Rene Lysloff (AKA prof) has been a musician and composer for most of his life. He played keyboards in blues and rock bands, studied classical piano and music theory, and for the last twenty-five years or so has been learning (and teaching) the instruments of the Central Javanese gamelan (an ensemble made up mostly of gongs, gong chimes, and metal keyed instruments). He is a compulsive composer, active laptop music performer, and enthusiastic scholar. Currently, for his day job, he is an associate professor of ethnomusicology at the University of California, Riverside.
